The project “Improved Livelihoods through Enhanced Access to Forest Products, Services, Finances and Value Chains (LEAF)” addresses the environmental and socioeconomic challenges associated with the unsustainable use of forest resources in Zambia. As part of the broader Green Nexus Programme (GNP), it supports the development of sustainable forest value chains, more responsible use of forest resources and the creation of economic opportunities for local communities.

The project is jointly implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the Czech Development Agency (CzDA). Within the project, AICS is responsible for the Matching Grants Facility through which enterprise development and investment in forest value chains will be supported. Through CzDA, the Czech Republic contributes expertise and experience in sustainable forestry, production practices and the development of forest value chains. Key elements of the Czech contribution include support for sustainable charcoal production and alternative energy sources, sustainable timber production and timber traceability. CzDA will support the introduction and pilot testing of more environmentally friendly production practices and solutions. The project also includes training and practical technical assistance for local communities, producers, businesses and other relevant stakeholders, with the aim of strengthening their technical capacities and promoting the sustainable management of forest resources.

In the area of timber traceability, CzDA will build on activities carried out under the SLIM project, which is also implemented by the Czech Development Agency in Zambia. Under LEAF, CzDA will support the implementation of selected components of the Timber Traceability Roadmap at both the institutional and field levels, with the aim of contributing to a more transparent and sustainable timber sector in Zambia.

The Czech approach emphasizes the link between the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources and the socioeconomic development of local communities. The LEAF project thus contributes not only to more sustainable forest management, but also to the creation of economic opportunities, enterprise development and improved livelihoods for people in Zambia.
